people get phoenix tattoo's for a number of reasons.
the obvious:
1. rebirth
2. rising from the ashes and becoming stronger, over coming troubles, etc.

but.
3. harry potter

I generally don't have any problem with people using my already-created work as a basis for their tattoos. I appreciate that you asked first. Most people would not extend me that courtesy!

indeed. I was showing someone the tattoo in a web-cam chat room, and they said that they had seen it before up in a tattoo studio somewhere in america (im in australia), as a template. so I'm guessing that phoenix has been stolen a few times... Perhaps you should make it un-downloadable for people who dont ask to use it?

All things considered, the phoenix sketch you used is a fairly archetypical depiction of a phoenix - fire and flames, rising up with an open beak - and it doesn't surprise me at all that people have seen similar things in other tattoo shops.

Also, my experience has demonstrated to me that tattoo artists live by a different code of conduct from artists involved in the commercial art industry. As far as I've ever seen, they don't care if an image is copyright or trademark protected - they see it, they like it, and they use it at will. Anything they can pull off the internet is fair game. I gave up trying to fight it and finally decided that if people want to use what they see of my work, I'm going to have to accept it. I just watermark the hell out of my work these days and appreciate it when folks like you are courteous enough to ask permission and then share the results! :glomp:
